Drunk driving legal defense attorneys can help college students

On Behalf of | Sep 6, 2019 | Drunk Driving Charges

Summer is coming to an end and autumn is on the horizon. For college students in Georgia, football season is in full swing, which often means parties and tailgating. Even students that are of legal drinking age may find themselves in trouble, and may want to look into drunk driving legal defense attorneys.

Recently, a star player for the University of Georgia football team was booked on drunk driving charges. Campus police report that they observed the defensive lineman driving erratically. They pulled the vehicle over to investigate further after it reportedly swerved left of center and ended up entirely on the wrong side of the roadway. Field sobriety tests were performed, which the young man apparently did not pass.

Officers claim the athlete’s eyes appeared to be glassy, and they suspected he may have been under the influence of alcohol. They charged him with failure to maintain lane and underage alcohol possession. He was taken to jail shortly before 4:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, and his bond was set at $3,000 even though all charges were misdemeanors. Apparently he satisfied the terms of the bond as he was released a little over an hour later.

Drunk driving defense attorneys are available to help people that find themselves in a similar situation. For a student athlete, being convicted of a crime can result in loss of scholarship or dismissal from a sports team, in addition to the criminal consequences. An attorney can help fight the charges in court and protect a student’s future. Being charged with a crime is not evidence of guilt, and in many cases, charges can be reduced or dropped entirely.
